Have you ever tried to bring 3,000 board game lovers together without rolling a critical failure, summoning a dragon, or flipping the table in frustration?

USAOPOLY pulled off this at Gen Con, the undisputed hub of tabletop gaming. As a huge sponsor of the legendary convention, they didn’t just want a standard booth with a stagnant pop-up banner, they wanted a full-blown interactive adventure. So, they teamed up with Picture Mosaics to build a live print photo mosaic that turned attention from the convention center floor into their booth.

A Convention-Wide Side Quest

We engineered a custom QR code placed everywhere across the entire venue. Guests didn’t have to wait in line to become a part of this; they embarked on a mini side-quest. Gamers hunted down QR code while being able to take in the hoards of cosplayers, foam swords, and heated card battles. After finding a checkpoint, they submitted a quick photo and received a unique digital key in return.

Players then carried this digital loot back to our main activation station, scanned their phone, and watched their personal puzzle piece print live on the spot.

Loot Drops and Lucky Tiles

It took over 3,000 individual images to construct the final masterpiece. To seriously up the ante, USAOPOLY sprinkled hidden prize tiles straight into the photo mosaic. Every time the printer fired up, the crowd held their breath. If your face happened to print on a lucky square, you instantly scored exclusive board game swag. Talk about rolling a natural 20 on a luck check. It transformed a simple photo op into a high-stakes tabletop lottery.

Deck-Building with Selfies

Nobody left the booth empty-handed. In the ultimate two-for-one trade, guests peeled and stuck their photo onto the massive photo mosaic, physically building the artwork piece by piece alongside their fellow attendees. Then, they pocketed a 4×6 photo keepsake to take home for themselves. It was deck-building, but with photos.

Watching 3,000 strangers collaborate to construct a monumental piece of art proved that the gaming community always brings their A-game. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but this one took over 3,000 players to finally spell it out.
